Pitch Lake

Pitch Lake in Trinidad & Tobago is the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world. It covers about 100 acres and is 250 feet deep. Formed from petroleum seeping from the Earth's crust, Pitch Lake is unique because visitors can walk on its surface. Sir Walter Raleigh used its asphalt to caulk his ships in 1595.
